rooms with herringbone floors.

My latest interiors obsession is herringbone patterned floor design. This design element compliments both contemporary and traditional spaces and adds a dimension of texture and movement to every room it occupies. I think my favorite examples are those in hardwood flooring where the tone of floor boards vary throughout (see the first example below). That being said, herringbone patterns have also been popping up in tile and brick flooring and the results are really impressive.

Below I’ve compiled some of my favorite examples of rooms with herringbone flooring. Happy Friday and enjoy!

I’m very fortunate to work for a company with a lot of employee benefits – including free daily lunch. For this reason I rarely feel any pangs of jealousy when hearing about other company’s office perks. However, seeing photos from DropBox’s San Fransisco headquarters and their beautiful cafeteria, I have to say, made me a little bit envious of the people that get to enjoy that space every day. The 5,000 sq. ft dining hall was designed by NYC firm, AvroKo. Here’s what they have to say about the project:

“Taking inspiration from one of the company’s mottos, ‘sweat the details,’ the design focuses on small features and individually crafted furniture and lighting to transform moods and create a flexible space.”

Check out some of my favorite images below.

Finally getting back to the blog after a long holiday break from posting. This first post of 2017 features a truly unique home in Southern Utah being auctioned later this month. The Utah Cliff House is, as the name suggests, built into a cliff in the Utah desert near Arches National Park. The 2,100 square foot residence includes an additional 12 acres of property and comes equipped with modern amenities despite its remote location. The original architects and owners of the home are looking to auction their remarkable property to a buyer who shares their passion for the land and history of the site.

While I don’t think I’d be the right buyer, I have to say that seeing these images has made me nostalgic for the trip I took last year to Arches National Park. Check out the video below for a tour of the home and its surrounding property. Enjoy!

I have this reoccurring issue where every time I try to do my holiday shopping for friends and family, all I can seem to find are gifts that I would like to receive. I was searching the internet this week for some unconventional subscription services that might make good presents and came across Papirmass, a subscription model which delivers exclusive art prints by up-and-coming artists to its subscribers. I love how this business seeks to lift up its artists while simulataneously enriching the homes of its subsribers. If I didn’t already own more art than can fit on the walls of my apartment I would absolutely be enrolling myself in this service.

Papirmass also hosts a blog on its website where you can see more work from artists and read about new features to the subscription service. Below I’ve included some of my favorite pieces from Papirmass’ December featured artists, Matt Harrison Clough. You can read an interview with the artist here.

Sharing a slightly different kind of home tour today.. A cookie company in London has created what is arguably the most incredible gingerbread house of all time. The gingerbread architects as Biscuiteers Baking Company spent 500 hours creating  this 6ft-tall edible mansion, inspired by the the real-life Waddesdon Manor in the U.K. Watch the video below to see some of the work that went into this project, along with some really remarkable comparisons to the actual mansion.

If you don’t currently subscribe to Feature Shoot‘s email newsletter you should sign up right now. Last week the site featured a collection of images shot using drone cameras. I personally have mixed opinions about drones. I once lived in an apartment building where one of my neighbors regularly flew his drone just outside the windows of the building and it always made me nervous that he was spying on me. That being said, I’ve recently seen some really incredible photos and videos that have been shot using drone cameras and it’s hard to argue with the beauty of the results. Below are some of my favorites from the Feature Shoot post. Check out the full collection here.

musical musings – alunageorge.

Adding a new category on the blog today. Musical Musings posts will showcase artists whose music I’m currently loving who also employ cool/pretty/visually interesting album artwork. To start I’m sharing AlunaGeorge’s new album, I Remember. I’ve been listening to this album pretty much on repeat for about a week now and I’m finding new things to love about it the more I listen. If you’re not familiar, AlunaGeorge is a London-based musical duo consisting of Aluna Francis and George Reid. Their music is categorized as “Electronic” on iTunes but their sound is also very much informed by R&B. Singer, Aluna Francis provides vocals for the group which feel reminiscent of artists like Aaliyah and Groove Theory’s Amel Larrieux. I Remember is AlunaGeorge’s second album and they’re definitely showing a maturity since their previous release – both musically and in regards to their album art. I have an affinity for artists that choose to forgo traditional portrait photography on an album and opt for something more abstract instead. I love the linear-style illustration they’re using here and that the fusion of the two beings feels related to the duo’s musical collaboration. Check out the album cover below and listen to I Remember on iTunes here.
