rooms with herringbone floors.

My latest interiors obsession is herringbone patterned floor design. This design element compliments both contemporary and traditional spaces and adds a dimension of texture and movement to every room it occupies. I think my favorite examples are those in hardwood flooring where the tone of floor boards vary throughout (see the first example below). That being said, herringbone patterns have also been popping up in tile and brick flooring and the results are really impressive.

Below I’ve compiled some of my favorite examples of rooms with herringbone flooring. Happy Friday and enjoy!

a few of my favorite things – Etsy gift guide.

You know it’s officially the pre-holiday season when Etsy releases their annual gift guides. These lists can be super helpful but also a little overwhelming because they have sooooo many sub-categories. It’s really easy to go deep into the rabbit hole of looking through suggested list after list around this time of year. From tea towels to tech accessories, these Etsy collections literally include something for everyone on your list. Below I’ve selected some of my favorite items. Hope you enjoy!

a few of my favorite things – cb2 kaleidoscope collection.

So I’ve been a fan of Crate & Barrel’s little sister, CB2, for a while but I’ve never considered it a store where I could have completely outfit a home. While I love their modernist style, their collection as a whole often felt slightly too minimalist-industrial for my taste – the kind of place where I might shop a few items but wouldn’t be replicating their catalog layouts. Example below:

That’s all recently changed though. CB2 recently debuted their Kaleidoscope Collection, in collaboration with British fashion designer, Matthew Williamson, and it’s blowing my mind. The Kaleidoscope Collection, which Williamson describes the collection as “controlled bohemia”, adds the perfect punch of vintage style and SO much color the store’s signature modern aesthetic. I love to see a brand evolving in ways that enhance their collection without abandoning their trademark style. I’ve listed a few of my favorite pieces from the Kaleidoscope Collection below.

a few of my favorite things – the citizenry.

Home goods retailer, The Citzenry, sources products from artisans around the world. I recently discovered this brand and was so impressed by their mission to bring small-batch crafts to the online market and by the natural-yet-sophisticated aesthetic of their pieces. Each season The Citizenry reveals a new collection featuring goods from just one country’s craftsmen (this season’s is Ireland). Below I’ve collected my favorite piece from each of their existing collections. Head over to their site to see more beautiful products and read about their philosophy.

rooms with lucite furniture.

Lucite furniture seems to be having a moment. For a couple of years now I’ve noticed this modern material appearing all over design magazines and blogs. Though lucite furniture can be found in a variety of colors, it’s the clear glass-looking items that I’ve seen popping up in the portfolios of designers and stylists. In its transparent form, lucite reads as a neutral and can add a glamorous and modern feel to a space. Below, I’ve collected some of my favorite examples of lucite furniture from around the web. Enjoy!

rooms with kilim rugs (including mine).

For a few months now I’ve noticed vintage kilim rugs popping up all over my favorite design sites and instagram accounts. I’ve written before about my love for vintage/modern collaborations and I’ve come to the conclusion that these textiles are the perfect item to add some vintage aesthetic to any space.

When I moved earlier this summer we had a space between our living area and kitchen that needed a little design love. I had read that Etsy was a great resource for finding vintage rugs and vendors who would ship overseas. Etsy turned out to be almost too great of a resource because I spent an embarrassing amount of time scrolling through page after page of rugs trying to decide on the perfect choice. I ultimately settled on a 50+ year old vintage rug from vendor SilkRoadRugs in Turkey. The rug arrived exactly as pictured and the shipping was remarkably fast. While I can’t vouch for every vendor on Etsy, I would certainly recommend this one. The rug I purchased is pictured below. Continue scrolling to see more of my favorite examples of rooms with kilim rugs from around the web.

Please excuse the terrible lighting of this photo – my apartment windows cast very long shadows in the afternoon.

pairing modern chairs with vintage tables.

Last summer I upcycled a small table that my aunt had in storage. The table has two leaves that fold out so that it can comfortable seat 4 but can also be used as a buffet table when the leaves are down. Here’s a photo for reference:

IMG_2223

When I moved a month ago I had big plans for using this table (leaves out) as a little dining table in our new apartment. I spent a lot of time thinking about what chairs should accompany it and I was really excited for the opportunity to execute one of my favorite styles – pairing vintage and modern pieces. In the end, the table didn’t quite fit in the space the way I had hoped so this dream will have to be shelved for our next move. In the process of trying to decide on the right set of dining chairs I collected a bunch of images for inspiration that I thought I’d share anyway. Scroll down to see some of my favorite examples of modern chairs paired with vintage-style tables from around the web.

rooms with ceiling medallions.

When you’re talking about vintage style in a home, crown molding gets a lot of attention. An element that I’ve been noticing a lot lately are vintage-style ceiling medallions which have a similar ornamental effect as a beautiful molding but carry a little more weight and can add a lot of drama and elegance to a space. Especially in a room with very high ceilings, these pieces can add depth to a space and lend some extra impact to a great light fixture. I’ve collected some of my favorite examples below. Enjoy!

Not sure if this last one really qualifies as a ceiling medallion – maybe more of a ceiling ornament. It’s so pretty that I had to include it either way.

rooms with illustrated wallpaper.

As a renter, the very idea of wallpapering a room is a far off dream for me. That hasn’t stopped me from from keeping an eye on the wallpaper trends that I’ve seen popping up around the design community as of late. One of my favorite trends of the moment is the use of illustrated wallpaper patterns. The hand-drawn feeling of these designs can really lend a more modern or whimsical feeling to a room. Check out some of my favorites below..
